Greek translation is below for the benefit of those who are responsible for these employees.

"We wished to ask about a bus timetable to use buses from Ammoudara to Agios Nikolaos as you suggested was possible, a time table was grudging given but I needed to know where we caught it from AN back again, given the one way system we couldn’t assume we’d catch it where we got off, and as it would be dark it was important we knew for sure, though if stuck we could have used a taxi. She sneeringly told me ‘the bus station’ well I didn’t know A N had a bus station, York doesn’t for example. She could have politely, helpfully, on a map shown us where. In the event we drove in, but in other countries we’ve enjoyed using local buses to get about. I also asked about locations, days etc of local markets but she really couldn’t be bothered. There were other things I’d intended ask such as where the museums were in A N (your info gives opening times but not the street they are on) boat trips other than Spinalonga and other sites, attractions etc. as there weren’t many info leaflets about, but she was much more interested in chatting with her colleague. Her whole manner was very supercilious, very off putting. Lancaster Tourist office has just won an award for the way it dealt with mystery ‘shoppers’ on the phone in the office – well she would certainly have failed! Everyone else we encountered was very friendly and helpful. The one person we would have expected to be was very disdainful."

And we ask why we have no tourism ...........

This is not the first complaint about the staff in Tourist Information. Even natives of the area, born and bred in Agios Nikolaos, are leaving because there is no work for them and no future for their children.

A financial expert from the U.K has recently left for Portugal because he sees no future for his child in Agios Nikolaos. Prices (the highest in Greece) have driven away the retired people and the businesses can no longer afford to pay their rents. One of my friends is leaving, taking his business to another area. Disillusioned with the lack of planning and modern thinking in this town. He spends over 60,000 euros a year in this town, all of which comes from outside Greece and is injected into the local economy. Just these two people leaving Agios Nikolaos have reduced the money taken by shops by over 100,000 euros per year.

It is too late now. Too late because of the talking, the delays, the lack of action, the lack of vision, the lack of control of noise pollution, the lack of control of parking, the dirty beaches, and most of all because of the old men who are controlling the town with ideas that were out of date in 1980.

This town is dead, and it is the end. Any other town would have used this beautiful building as a museum, or visitor centre. You can always rely on Agios Nikolaos to screw up.

The destruction of the old olive factory near Ammos beach is another example of the gross stupidity of the place. Where else would a historic building be converted into a car park?

Finally, where else would a taverna get a visit from the police and sent to Neapoli because they had a couple of local boys playing lyra to entertain the tourists?

This is the behaviour of a town with serious mental health problems.

Anyone know a good psychiatrist?

So that is where the tourists are!

Everyone keeps saying that tourism is depressed and that it is the fault of the world economy. Everyone is suffering and that makes us feel better here in Agios Nikolaos and Elounda.

My friends, I can tell you (because I was there on Saturday) that Rethymnon is not empty. There are thousands of tourists and they are all outside the hotels using the restaurants and bars. Sitting in a cafe I counted over 400 tourists walking past me towards the old town at 18.30. This figure doubled when the beach road was completely closed to traffic at 19.30.

The bars were charging six euros for a large beer, served with excellent mezedes and a free glass of cold water was served to every customer on entrance to the bars, if you had to wait to be served. Attractive and friendly bar staff smiled and made guests welcome. The prices were justified by the standard of service and small children played in the street with no fear of being hit by cars or motor cycles.

I stayed in a 5 star hotel, which was 30 metres from a beautiful, clean, sandy beach and 300m from the old town. It was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in anywhere in the world. The management and staff were friendly and attentive and the breakfast was superb. An overnight car park, however, cost me 11 euros (!)

So........

The prices are higher than ours. They have quality accommodation, restaurants (no better, in my opinion, than those in Agios Nikolaos), the roads are closed to traffic in the evening to allow the tourists to safely walk around the town, and they have thousands and thousands of tourists who are all out in the evening spending money.

When we tried to close the town to traffic last year there was an outcry. The people of Rethymnon can manage to walk a few hundred metres to the bars and tavernas in the evening but we have obviously lost the use of our legs. The pleasure of sitting with a beer without the constant noise from motor cycles was probably the biggest difference between the two towns.

One, however, is a busy tourist resort, and the other is Agios Nikolaos.

Don't be fooled. There are thousands of tourists on the island, but nobody wants to come to Agios Nikolaos anymore. The town is dirty and noisy, the beaches are polluted, the traffic and parking are a nightmare and the police will give you a ticket just for breathing, whilst ignoring the major problems of hard drugs and anti-social behaviour.

Perhaps the bar and restaurant owners should go over there and take a look one evening. It would be very interesting to see what they had to say to the Mayor when they get back to this "ghost town"

You can complain and moan about the lack of tourism but if you don't change your attitude, stop the all inclusive hotels in the centre of the town and clean this place up, you won't have any tourists at all by 2012.

Tourism? Two days later one of my friends had dermatological problems from swimming there, possibly due to the human faeces floating in the water. The photograph on the left was also taken on 01/07/09 at Karovastasi beach. It was covered in rubbish, plastic bottles and debris. How is this a Blue Flag beach? Let us hope that I was the only one to take a photograph that day and that the Blue Flag authorities do not see it.

http://www.heraklion.gr/en/visitor/visitor.html is a professional website, as is http://www.chania.gr/en/city/welcome.html

Take a look, and compare them to www.agiosnikolaos.eu

The internet is a vital marketing tool and a much better investment than sending people on "paid holidays" to trade exhibitions around the world.

Cheap tourism fills the all-inclusive hotels with noisy "no money" tourists from poor countries. For two nights the residents and tourists around the Hermes hotel have been unable to sleep because of illegal beach parties fuelled by cheap vodka from Lidl and encouraged by tour operators. At least the 18-30's from Britain spent money in the bars! The bars and restaurants are empty and the shops are closing, only to be replaced with Chinese and Pakistani shops selling cheap goods.

Our children have no work and are leaving the area. All day and night they drive around on (specially modified for this purpose) noisy motorcycles causing even further damage to the little tourism we have. Their parents have debts to the banks which cannot be repaid. Soon people will lose their homes, their cars and what is left of their dignity.

Money is happily invested in more cafe bars for the unemployed children to sit in (drinking frappes), but not in accommodation to attract high spending visitors. Our investment priorities are very different to places like Rethymnon and Xania. How many people have built villas (which they are now unable to sell) for a "fast profit" when a long term investment in quality boutique hotels on the harbour would ensure income for many years for them and their children. The future will not be from selling coffee to TEI students or tolerating their graffiti and noisy anti-social behaviour, which local children seem to think is "cool" and copy like the idiots they are. Their parents of course do nothing to stop it.

The Loggia and Panorama hotels on the harbour are closed to tourists. Where else in Greece would two harbour front properties like these be left unused? In Rethymnon, Xania or Heraklion they would be high quality boutique hotels commanding rental rates of 200 + euros per room per day, for example http://www.hotelcivitas.com/en/prices.html

How long will it be before someone realises that the town needs to take action? It needs to be re-marketed and this must be done now, immediately, to avoid the town suffering even more in 2010. Many tourists still believe that this town is full of noisy bars and disco clubs and is like Malia. This stops higher earners from coming to Agios Nikolaos and is not a true reflection of the town. An initial marketing campaign (including a new website) to reverse this would not cost more than 50000 euros if sourced in the U.K. Sadly, I have no doubt that another two years of meetings and sub-commitees would be required to make even the simplest of decisions.

Every day I hear the complaints from professionals and every day I see that nothing positive is done to change it. The Demos are useless and DEAN under Varda, is even more useless. Finally the Mayor has admitted, two years after being clearly told at a meeting, that the all inclusive problem is killing this town. We all know he is frightened of the hotel group who own most of the hotels in the town. That was proved when they blackmailed their way to getting the new "marina" at the Mirabello. I understand that this is not how politicians are meant to think but perhaps he should think of his responsibilities to the whole community and not just the politics of remaining in power and taking care of his friends and allies.

And finally, on the subject of our declining tourism

In my opinion, if you are drowning, it is always better to attempt to swim than to wait for someone to throw you a lifebelt.

Even more important here of course, because if it was anything like Ammos beach, the lifeguard would be 60 years old, a friend of someone in the Demos and would probably be asleep while you were drowning.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://agiosnikolaosblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/tourism-what-can-be-done.html' title='Tourism? Then they decide to let it go ahead. If this is a straight legal matter it is either right or wrong. Which one is it? Isn't that what courts of law are for? It can't be half right and half wrong.

Of course, it will be built, and when it is finished it will be too late to do anything about the environmental effects. As usual, the blackmailing rich and powerful have won the battle, threatening job losses and closure of other hotels in the area if they don't get their way. It is still astonishing that one hotel company have been allowed to wield such economic power in a city the size of Agios Nikolaos.

Turtles, fish and seabirds don't have the resources to fight them but it is sad to see that the apathetic people of the town have allowed themselves to be coerced into allowing this to proceed.

There are already new coastal developments like this in Elounda, two in Vathi and now this ....

And the local authority has the audacity to say that it cares about the environment.

Neither the Mirabello nor Agios Nikolaos need this to advance their tourism.
Feigning concern, whilst utilising the opportunity to charge "ticket tout" prices for flights to the U.K, and capitalising on the misfortune of those affected to frighten people away from independent travel (in cooperation with the outdated ABTA, which is all but controlled by the large tour operators), they are acting in a disgraceful and unethical fashion.

The CAA is doing a sterling job and should be congratulated for their professionalism, which I experienced personally last night. But how did XL get away with selling unbonded flights via their website? Surely the implication of an ATOL protected carrier should have carried warnings regarding the lack of security for those booking direct, rather than via Freedom Flights?

Everyone in the travel industry knew that XL/Kosmar were going under 2 weeks ago. If TUI and Thomas Cook really cared (and my guess is they didn't), why were there no warnings? Simple. Like I said, have a look at their share prices.

Kosmar had only a few properties in Agios Nikolaos. Olympic Holidays might be the next company to go under, and if that happens, we will regret the lack of vision and forward planning at ΔΕΤΑΔΑΝ for many, many years. We have to plan for the future and research and develop new, richer, markets. Something that should have been done five years ago.

I spoke today with a bar owner who always has many returning customers in September. 50% of them have telephoned him to explain that their holiday has been cancelled because their flights were with XL.

It is almost too late now to save our tourism for 2009. When will somebody in authority listen and take some action? Most of the tourist apartments are up for sale, so are the bars and restaurants. Can no-one at the Dimos see what is happening?

Before it really is too late for the town.............

Missing link

Want to see a tour of Agios Nikolaos?

Click on http://www.iam-360.com/demo/TOURS/Ag-Nikolaos/index.htm link from www.aghiosnikolaos.gr and www.dimosagn.gr

Another fantastic piece of work by the amateurs who are responsible for our tourism .........

Wedding

Last night no-one could pass along Akti Koundourou near the Hermes Hotel. Ring or no ring.

So it doesn't really make much difference at all, does it? But as usual there are always people who want to blame the wrong thing instead of fixing the real problem.

That, I am afraid, is a much bigger issue than any inconvenience caused by the ring. I would be a lot happier if the criticism of the mayor was directed at the lack of planning for the future, rather than a short term inability to walk a few steps instead of driving your cars around all night, polluting the atmosphere, not only with emissions and smoke but also with noise.

Seriously, it is a better place to live with the ring in place. The one where everybody walked and talked to each other?)

And still there are people who think it is a bad thing!

When you live in a busy city and you go on holiday you want to relax and have a little peace.

That is why Naxos and Mykonos have high spending tourists and we don't.

If we keep the ring (all season, not just in August) we can show the world that we care about our visitors.

And then we might actually get some!!!!!!

REasons to be cheerful - part 3

Inclement weather and budgetary awareness are driving Brits to book holidays at the eleventh hour, according to online travel agent Lastminute.com The website says the rise in costs and the credit crunch has prompted Brits to wait and see if they could really afford a holiday but now the classic British summer has shown its colours they are booking in droves. The site reports an increase in its week-on-week trading with traffic of unique visitors searching holidays up 23% over the last week, as the weather declined. Most searched departure dates were July 19 and 26 and August 2. It says that European destinations are suffering as Brits look to make their pound stretch further and avoid the costly euro with Turkey and Egypt performing particularly well – both up 14% year-on-year. Bookings to Tunisia are up 95% and Croatia an impressive 150%. Those looking to stay in the UK on holiday are showing signs of taking a couple of shorter breaks rather than one two-week long holiday. Lastminute says coastal areas are doing a roaring trade, with bookings to Brighton hotels up 70% year on year, Bournemouth 20% and Eastbourne 66%. It also reports stronger sales for UK theme parks, attractions, theatre and concert tickets. Breaks including these have gone up 18% year-on-year. Lastminute.com managing director John Bevan said: “This summer our customers are going where their pound will take them further and where good bargains are to be had. We are seeing a strong interest in destinations outside the Euro, whether these are short or long haul. We are also noticing that Britons are trying to find ways to cut corners by spreading short breaks throughout the summer as well as throughout the year but also by finding cheaper ways to have a good time at home or abroad.”

Cheap and totally effective. Requires no policing, and can be implemented in a few hours. The website link http://www.signplas.co.uk/road_speed_ramps.htm has a shopping cart for the demos to use.

If we put speed ramps down, (it can be done overnight!) around Kitroplatia we would probably not need the ring at all. Amazing that people in the town will pay 500.00 euros for membership of a gym but cannot walk 400 metres from their car to go to a cafe. Perhaps some BIG signs to tell visitors entering the town and some marked parking places would make it more useful. I didn't even know it was there until I read the newspaper.

The tour guide who said that the prices were high in Agios Nikolaos is entitled to his opinion. It is a free country and a democratic one. What madness to try to find a policeman to be a witness and sue for defamation. It might have been a better idea to take the licence number of the bus and the name of the company that employed the guide. A word in the ear of the owner might make more difference. At least this highlights the fact that we need to re-market the town.

Why are we wasting our time and money on the "IRIS"? Who is interested in organic dyes for clothing. How many visitors does it get? Not a lot, you can bet. Another waste of time and money. It was closed for 2 years and no-one even noticed.

Bravo for the suggestion that we should make more of the (tenuous) connection with Nearchos. The plaque at the entrance to the marina is written in (ancient) Greek. A translation nearby in a few other languages might assist our visitors to see the connection with the great admiral.

Only in this town

Only here could someone have the idea of re-surfacing the road at the "fanaria" in the middle of July.

Why???????

They have had the whole year to do it.

Do they get some twisted satisfaction out of doing things at the worst possible time?

What a fantastic welcome to the town that was for visitors. I saw a taxi last night driving down Akti Koundourou travelling at 80km/hour past the hotels (Coral/Hermes). Motor bikes do this on a regular basis and never seem to get a ticket.

One day someone will die because of this. It might be a small child or a tourist (or both!)

Which one of these is the most serious crime?

Taxi drivers are not above the law, even if they think they are. At least you can say that they have a reason to be "running". The others are just inconsiderate idiots who damage the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

We could start by giving tickets to all the people without number plates. There IS a reason why they do this. And it IS always illegal.

Football

So the traders on Roussou Koundourou plan to play football in the streeet to show their disapproval of the new measures.

Grow up and stop behaving like small children.

The single biggest complaint by tourists who visit Agios Nikolaos is the noise from the constant "volta" by scooters, cars and motor cycles.

This measure will bring more visitors to your shops, not less.....

The shops should be asking for it to apply from April to October instead of this half hearted effort for 6 weeks in July and August. Keep encouraging all-inclusive. But don't complain when the shops all close. Don't complain when there are no restaurants. And don't complain when your children have no work in the coming years to support you, or the town.

My Greek friend who owns a shop said that it is the worst season he has ever had. His young son had just come from the frontisterio.

Let us hope that his father can still pay for his lessons next year.

Bus stops and parking

Bravo to Είναι να μην σ' ενοχλεί; for showing the chaos caused by the buses stopping outside the Hermes and Coral. This can only happen if we improve the quality that we provide to the people visiting our country.
Once upon a time, Greece’s comparative advantage was the sun and sea. Today, this is not enough. Lots of countries around us can offer the same thing – and at lower prices.
Our comparative advantage must now be the prospect of offering visitors better service than they would get elsewhere.
Everyone involved in this industry, which is the driving force of the Greek economy, has to love what they are doing.
They must understand that there are many people in the world who would gladly pay high prices if they could be guaranteed top-quality service.
They want to feel that their money has not been wasted and that they got what they paid for."

Nice to know that it is not only me that feels this way ........ A celebration meal. One of the restaurants in Elounda has been modernised and we went to see if the food was as nice as the decoration.

I parked outside at 19.45 ( yes 19.45!) and almost before we had closed the car door two (!) people leaped out and told us that we would have to pay 3 euros to park there.

There was no-one in the restaurant (or in Elounda, actually), except the staff. I had 200 euros in my wallet to pay for an expensive meal.

I did what many people would do. I got back into the car, parked (free of charge) in Agios Nikolaos and spent my 200 euros in a restaurant there.

I am sure the owner of the restaurant in Elounda will be pleased to hear this story. I genuinely admire the way he has improved his restaurant but, as a matter of principle, I cannot see why I should pay an extra 3 euros to eat there.

Elounda has lost many of the tour companies that provided customers for the tavernas, restaurants and bars. It needs all the help it can get. Charging people to park there is not the way to do it.

The restaurants are expensive enough and a 10% gratuity for the waiter in addition to the 2% "tourist tax", 8% Φ.Π.Α (19% on the wine!), a cover charge for a piece of bread, etc. makes a meal an expensive luxury.

Now tell me why the restaurants are complaining that they have no customers. 3 euros may not be a lot of money to the Demos, or to me, but it is a "stealth tax" on tourists. A visit to the harbour for lunch and dinner would add 84 euros to a 14 day holiday.

Yet another brilliantly devised plan to persuade the few tourists that are still coming here to go to Egypt, Croatia or Turkey next year.

Greek Football Shirts

Have you noticed how, for the last few days, the only people wearing Greek national football team shirts are non-Greek tourists?

Strange........

When does the tourist season start?

Why is this still not finished? In Rethymnon, or here? Find me one apartment in the central area of Agios Nikolaos that is of this standard.

This is the standard of apartments and small hotels in other parts of the island. The Hotels and apartments need to spend some money and get the accommodation up to this standard and we will also have the rich tourists. Not everyone wants to stay in the Elounda Beach (not even the Russians!)

For many years the hotels and apartments have been paid very little by large tour operators to provide basic accommodation for cheap tourism. They have not had any money to re-invest. The banks, the Demos and the Nomarxeio should be supporting these people and giving improvement grants.

Look at the "Panorama" on the harbour. Fantastic location and left to rot by the (Athenian?)owners. It is a disgrace that this hotel is not open. Look also at the "lakeside" hotel next to Du Lac. Falling to pieces and a disgrace to our city. It appears on every photograph of the lake area and it cannot be beyond the Demos to at least force the owners to, at least, paint it. What are we thinking?

The 18-30's will never come back to Agios Nikolaos. Forget them. The market has changed.

If Rethymnon and Xania can see that, why can't we?

Beautiful Sunday

What a beautiful day it was today. The "representative" spoke only Greek and could not communicate with the Finnish people who wanted to visit our town. I am sure he enjoyed his holiday in Helsinki as much as the "representatives" that we are sending out this year are enjoying their holidays.

Interestingly, Rhodos had a huge exhibition with live music and dancers. Xania also had a large prescence.

Do we get statistics for the success of these "trade exhibitions"? How many visitors do we get as a result of sending these people for a 3 day, all expenses paid trip to St. Petersburg, or Frankfurt, Or Beijing?????

I don't know what you think, but I am not seeing many Chinese tourists at the moment.

Or indeed many tourists at all.

If you want to sell to the Germans, French, Italians or the British, you have to do it in their language and have someone who can communicate effectively with them.

Many foreign residents have offered to go (unpaid) to these events in their own countries to assist in bringing visitors to the area. The Municipality have never accepted their help. Perhaps they are worried that if non-employees of the Demos went along, they would see how little work actually gets done. And that would ruin their holiday, wouldn't it?

Translation

Thanks to Michaelis Vasilakis for featuring the blog on http://blog.vasilakism.gr . He has offered to translate into Greek for the benefit of those who do not understand English.

Translation is an interesting area. When we print our information books for the municipality, why not ask a British/German/French resident to read it before it goes to the printer? God knows there are enough native speakers in the area who would be happy to do it without asking for payment.

The "English" on the (2004) website is terrible. I can only assume that the same applies to other languages.

We have a Foreign Residents Committee (I.N.C.O) http://www.inconews.com/ . Businesses were given just 6 days to get their copy into the printer (another political appointment, perhaps?). Why are we printing these information leaflets when the season is half finished? When will they understand that the planning for the summer must be done in the winter? We are never ready when the tourists arrive and they do come at the same time every year (for now....). Why is it always treated as such a suprise by the traders, hotels and the Demos?

Too much talking and forming commitees and not enough action.
